Nglanggeran, an ancient volcano located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is a unique geological site and a treasure trove of cultural legends. Estimated to have formed 60-70 million years ago during the Tertiary period (Oligo-Miocene), this geological marvel is composed mainly of agglomerates and volcanic breccia, giving it a distinct appearance. Nestled in Nglanggeran Village, Patuk Sub-district, Gunung Kidul Regency, this site lies within the Baturagung mountain range.
The Legend of Nglanggeran
Nglanggeran is steeped in folklore. According to local tales, it was once a site for punishing villagers who disrespected traditional wayang (shadow puppets). The name "Nglanggeran" originates from "nglanggar," meaning "to violate." Centuries ago, the villagers invited a puppeteer (dalang) to celebrate their harvest. However, their carelessness in damaging the puppets enraged the dalang, who cursed them into becoming wayang figures and banished them to Nglanggeran Hill.
The hill is said to house large boulders used for meditation. Local beliefs hold that Nglanggeran is guarded by Kyai Ongko Wijoyo and characters from Javanese wayang tales, such as Punokawan. On Javanese New Year’s Eve or sacred nights like Friday Kliwon, visitors often meditate at the peak. Remarkably, an artifact resembling the statue of Ken Dedes, a legendary Javanese queen, was once discovered here.
The Trekking Experience
Reaching the summit of Nglanggeran is an adventure in itself. The trek takes about two hours, winding through narrow rock corridors and earthen trails. Visitors may need ropes to scale some short, steep inclines. Clear signboards along the trail ensure a safe and guided journey. From the summit, the views are breathtaking—sunrise or sunset painting the sky in vivid hues is a sight not to be missed.
Ecotourism and Development
In 1999, local youth from Karang Taruna Bukit Putra Mandiri began managing Nglanggeran as a tourist attraction, charging an entry fee of just IDR 500. However, the facilities were limited at the time. Recognizing its potential for cultural and ecotourism, the Nglanggeran Tourism Village Management Board took over in 2008, introducing significant improvements.
One notable addition is Embung Nglanggeran, a 5,000-square-meter man-made reservoir situated at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level. This reservoir collects rainwater to irrigate nearby orchards of longan, durian, and rambutan. During the dry season, local farmers rely on it to water their crops. Visitors can climb steps to the embung, enjoying panoramic views of the ancient volcano and serene sunsets.
Admission Fees
As of July 1, 2016, entry fees for domestic visitors are IDR 15,000 during the day and IDR 20,000 at night, while foreign tourists are charged IDR 30,000. Managed officially by the Nglanggeran Village Youth Organization, the site offers an affordable and enriching weekend getaway, especially for hiking enthusiasts.
Whether you’re drawn by the geological marvel, the legendary tales, or the captivating views, Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano promises a memorable experience blending nature, history, and culture.4o
